The Drug Aware Ignite Basketball program offers career building workshops during its Saturday night session, through partner Extra Edge.
Extra Edge Community Services Inc is a not-for-profit organisation working towards ensuring a safe community and promoting wellbeing through innovative transition support programs for offenders and young people.
To help the 50 young people who regularly attend Ignite, Extra Edge offers one-to-one career counselling and information sessions on a monthly basis. The sessions focus on goal setting for the future and supports young people to get the job of their dreams.
Extra Edge facilitators originally conducted group sessions before offering individual sessions once a month.
“Taking career development into Ignite has been a great success. A connection was formed during the first group session and this continued into the one-to-one sessions. The barriers melted away, allowing them to focus on their future careers” says Extra Edge facilitator Daniel Whetton.
The sessions are run in an informal, casual manner with no time limits. This gives the young person an opportunity to fully explore their career options with a supportive and trained career consultant.
“We have seen a huge difference in the young people after taking part in just one or two sessions. Not only do they begin to think about what they want to do, they start to think they can actually achieve. This is really important when working with at-risk youth” says facilitator Chelsea Robinson.
